A Call For Independence
Western Canada. A land of plenteous riches, unparalleled beauty, and a strong-spirited people with remarkable resolve. When this land was settled originally by stoic pioneers from England, Scotland, Ireland, Ukraine, Poland, Germany, France, and many other nations, it was a land that presented various daunting challenges. The inhospitable and harsh environment, the lack of infrastructure or basic necessities, the constant struggle for existence; all of these challenges have crafted the very resilience that typifies all Western Canadians. The pioneering experience shaped a Western Canadian identity unique from any other on Earth. This is an identity which is characterized by a desire for liberty, a knack for living off of the land, an ability to overcome hardships of any form, and a deep sense of brotherhood among Western Canadians. Our culture is a potpourri of Eastern and Western European cultures, brought by the original settlers, combined with a Wild West sort of love of ranching and tending to livestock. Western Canadians are known for their sarcastic wit, their hard-working can-do attitude, and their undying resolve for conservatism. More than any trait common among Western Canadians and Western Canadian culture as a whole, it is our strong belief in conservative values and liberty that differentiate us from Eastern Canadians. Indeed, Eastern Canadians seem to have inherited the bureaucratic and big-government beliefs of the European Empires of yesteryear. That is only logical of course, since these areas were settled entirely by imperial subjects. The difference between the worldviews between Western and Eastern Canada has often been a source of division and regional tension in Canada as a whole. The division runs deep, and it is exacerbated by a litany of issues: the electoral system gives Western Canadians very little say in how federal politics are conducted in Ottawa, equalization payments, incompetent socialist governance in Ottawa, corruption in Ottawa, and the ongoing cultural experimentation on Canada as a whole by Ottawa. The list of grievances is long and rich with a history of resentment, but the divide between Western and Eastern Canada deeply worsened when Pierre Elliot Trudeau took the reins of power in Ottawa. Swift whirlwind reforms engulfed Ottawa during the First Trudeau Regime - the repatriation of the constitution from the United Kingdom, the introduction of the metric system, and most notably, the introduction of equalization payments. The infamous equalization payments. A system taken straight out of the Marxist's (of whom Trudeau Sr. himself was very fond, especially mass murderer and tyrant Fidel Castro of Cuba) handbook, in which money that was generated through the labour of hard-working Western Canadians was taken by Ottawa and given to the less wealthy Eastern Canada. This equalization payment system, designed by Trudeau Sr., has been used ever since, depleting Western Canada of its abundant wealth. The icing on the proverbial cake of this relationship is that while Western Canada was essentially bankrolling the entire nation of Canada, Easterners looked down their nose at us snobbishly, degrading us as "hillbillies", "rednecks", and "being behind the times". We were still given no say in how federal politics were decided (compared to the East which alone contained the vast majority of available seats in Parliament), despite our disproportionate contributions to the Canadian economy; we were being held in a state of political hostage by Eastern Canada, who forced us to come along on the ride that they decided to take down the road of ruin of socialist government.
Flash-forward several decades. In the new millennium, Western Canadians are still being subjected to abuse by Eastern Canada, a parasite, a succubus, on our very side. This abuse and subjugation by Ottawa only worsened with the return of an old enemy: Trudeau. Trudeau's emboldened son, Justin Trudeau, was elected Prime Minister of Canada with a majority government in October 2015. With his only qualification for the highest office in the land being his last name, aided by a rag-tag party of socialists, feminists, Islamic fundamentalists, and other undesirables, Trudeau was handed unrestricted power over Canada for four entire years. The West overwhelmingly voted against Trudeau - while the East voted overwhelmingly in favour of Trudeau (only reiterating the broken electoral system in Canada). At the time this article was written, Trudeau was only half way through his second term, and his rule of Canada is characterized by a broken economy, broken campaign promises, destroying our relationship with the US - our closest ally - , aiding and apologizing to convicted Taliban combatants (Omar Khadr), and ignoring and neglecting Western Canada, at the benefit of the East.

Western Canadians are in a state of absolute anguish right now, and have been for nearly a century. When will the abuse and corruption end? When will we be able to determine our own destiny - when will we finally be able to set out our own path politically? When will we restore our prosperity, which has since been squandered and ruined by Ottawa bureaucrats and their puppets in charge of provincial governments in Western Canada? There is no viable solution to these problems so long as we continue to subject ourselves to the abusive relationship we are engaged in with Ottawa. The shackles of oppression and misery can be shattered in one single manner - unconditional independence.
Western Canadians, if banded together in an independent nation of their own, could finally determine their own destiny politically and restore liberty and prosperity for all in our land. The Western Alliance, a libertarian secessionist organization which advocates for this unconditional independence of Western Canada (Yukon, Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories) into one sovereign state, wishes to accomplish just this.
A return to individual rights. Freedom of speech. Freedom of association. Freedom of movement. Minimal taxation. Private property rights. Firearm rights. Freedom of religion. All of these freedoms are principles which are of the highest degree of importance not only to Western Canadians, but to the Western Alliance as an organization. A return to a gold-backed currency, a prosperous free-market economy, and a strong stance on terrorism and crime will be fought for, tooth-and-nail, by the Western Alliance. A constitution that would unconditionally guarantee these rights for all Western Canadians, drafted by Western Canadians for Western Canadians, would be enshrined by our political movement immediately if given charge over Western Canada. We cannot surrender our rights to those who wish to enslave us - we must empower ourselves through freedom.
